What is a Thriller (Miss Begum)


according to wikipedia the definition of a thriller is "A thriller provides the sudden rush of emotions, excitement, sense of suspense and exhilaration that drive the narrative, sometimes subtly with peaks and lulls, sometimes at a constant, breakneck pace thrills. In this genre, the objective is to deliver a story with sustained tension, surprise, and a constant sense of impending doom. It keeps the audience cliff-hanging at the "edge of their seats" as the plot builds towards a climax. Thrillers tend to be fast-moving, psychological and threatening, mysterious and at times involve larger-scale villainy such as espionage, terrorism and conspiracy." this is what a thriller boils down to plus the basic conventions a thriller would have. For example twists mystery low key lighting and tension.

What are genres?

There are many genres in the media and film industry such as action, sci-fi, horror, comedy, romance and thriller. It is important to know these genres as it allows us to categorise a film and pick a genre that appeals to our tastes. It is also important to know about genres so a director will know what conventions to use to create a movie that would appeal to their target audience.

 

The thriller genres

A thriller is a genre that usually creates suspense, tension and excitement as the main elements. A good example of a thriller is silence of the lambs. Other types of genres are action   

 

Thriller films

Examples of popular thriller films like se7en, women in black and silence of the lambs  are all good examples of a thriller film as they all use the key elements to a thriller consisting of tension suspense and excitement. They also all use the typical antagonist setting up obstacles and challenges involving mystery.

Common themes in a thriller are: murder, tragedy, suffering, sin and captivity

These themes are commonly used as they create scenes where the audience is made to feel anxiety and terror. The aim of a thriller is to keep the audience alert and deliver a story of sustained tension. When watching a thriller we feel on edge nervous and afraid this arises from an intense build-up of tension. Certain twists in thriller films get us thinking leaving us uncomfortable in our own
