Research: Sound (miss Begum)

Sound

The clip "Mr and Mrs Smith: Final shootout" uses every type of sound defined below.

Sound

Sound in a film is used to create an atmosphere in the scene or communicate on screen. Also this will give the audience a better understanding of the character and there feelings. For example in a scene where there is an argument the dialogue used will help the viewer understand the anger of a character through the speech and tone the words are at.

Diegetic sound:
Diegetic sound, is sound which part of the film universe sound inside the scene weather it is dialogue on screen or music from a sound system off screen. explosions in the clip came from real explosion in the scene. part of the film world.

Non-Diegetic sound:
Non-diegetic sound is sound which comes from editing the clip. Sound which does not come from onscreen but from after scene shooting added sound effects. For example music is used to build up tension that comes from editing off a computer. there is a backing track to the clip thats been put into to make the scene interesting

The saw theme tune effectively creates atmosphere and tension being non diegetic sound making the scene effective.

On screen sound:
This is any noise that comes from on screen and the viewer can visibly see where the sound is on screen. An example of this is a radio on screen making a broadcast. In the clip we see mr an mrs smith shooting weapons and we hear the sound of gun fire

Off screen sound:
this type of sound is where we can hear the sound in the scene but cannot determine where its coming from, for example a scene in a cafe with a shot between two characters but we hear other voices in the background of the scene although we don’t know where exactly its coming from it makes sense. of screen we hear enemy gun fire but we do not know exactly where from but it still makes sense ane the scene effective

the off screen sound used in this clip is banes voice suprising the audience and pumping up the adrenaline and intensifying the scene

Parallel sound:
This is the sound we expect to hear in a scene for example in a traffic jam we expect to hear the sound of people using horns and engines runnin. in the clip they use gunfire to match the action in the scene. we hear the sound of a missle travel past off screen and then comes onto screen.

contrapuntal sound:

this is sound that has no meaning to the scene where it does not match up on screen. for example happy music when theres chaos. during the clip there is loads of chaos and fighting yet the music track playing is soft a melow.
the mr and mrs smith finall shootout is made more epic due to the confusing soundtrack that has no relevance to whats going on opening up the mind to the choas in contrast to the calm melody.

Analyasis

in this scene the use of sound is what makes half of the scene as the use of contrapuntal sound is used to put into perspective the volume of destruction that is happening. the tune mondo bongo is rather relaxing but the action doesnt allow the viewer to, putting the audience in a unfamiliar mood making the scene an epic rollercoaster.
Sound in mr and mrs smith is used effectivly such as off screen sound. as the sound of gun fire is clear but not where the location is from. this gives us a sense of how they must feel through the sound side of things. this makes the audience feel involved in the scene and makes it all the more enjoyable experience due to emotions the sound evokes such as terror and adrenaline.

Conclusion

in conclusion the use of sound will play a important part in creating my thriller as the dialouge is limited so i would need to make good use on different types of sound other than diegetic.

  1. Kay, again you demonstrate the understanding of the key terminology.

    To improve;
-introduce sound with more emphasis at the start of the post
-introduce your key terms with accurate definitions ensuring that you check your use of spelling and grammar
-analyse the scene towards the end of the post using PEER
    - conclude the post effectively

  2. Kay, when you go back and amend work, please try and improve on all the pointers rather than just a select few, so the feedback isn't repetitive

    To improve;
-The sound analysis and the clip should go together so it is easier to follow your work.
    -introduction to sound?
    -conclusion?

  3. Again Kay, it seems like you are including bits to add on, (which arent from thrillers) and you are not considering the actual feedback that has been provided.

  4. Better to the structure that you had before, and the work and analysis that you include makes more sense.

    It still needs improving:
-when analysing the Batman example, Bane's voice is not off-screen as you can see him on screen. It does not apply if he is wearing a mask
-Mr and Mrs Smith example needs to be anlaysed using PPER, making sure that you include the response the sound makes amongst the audience
-in your conclusion, be specific to the sounds that you plan to use
