Research: Sound (miss Begum)

Sound

The clip "Mr and Mrs Smith: Final shootout" uses every type of sound defined below.

Sound

Sound in a film is used to create an atmosphere in the scene or communicate on screen. Also this will give the audience a better understanding of the character and there feelings. For example in a scene where there is an argument the dialogue used will help the viewer understand the anger of a character through the speech and tone the words are at.

Diegetic sound:
Diegetic sound, is sound which part of the film universe sound inside the scene weather it is dialogue on screen or music from a sound system off screen. explosions in the clip came from real explosion in the scene. part of the film world.

Non-Diegetic sound:
Non-diegetic sound is sound which comes from editing the clip. Sound which does not come from onscreen but from after scene shooting added sound effects. For example music is used to build up tension that comes from editing off a computer. there is a backing track to the clip thats been put into to make the scene interesting

The saw theme tune effectively creates atmosphere and tension being non diegetic sound making the scene effective.

On screen sound:
This is any noise that comes from on screen and the viewer can visibly see where the sound is on screen. An example of this is a radio on screen making a broadcast. In the clip we see mr an mrs smith shooting weapons and we hear the sound of gun fire

Off screen sound:
this type of sound is where we can hear the sound in the scene but cannot determine where its coming from, for example a scene in a cafe with a shot between two characters but we hear other voices in the background of the scene although we don’t know where exactly its coming from it makes sense. of screen we hear enemy gun fire but we do not know exactly where from but it still makes sense ane the scene effective

the off screen sound used in this clip is banes voice suprising the audience and pumping up the adrenaline and intensifying the scene

Parallel sound:
This is the sound we expect to hear in a scene for example in a traffic jam we expect to hear the sound of people using horns and engines runnin. in the clip they use gunfire to match the action in the scene. we hear the sound of a missle travel past off screen and then comes onto screen.

contrapuntal sound:

this is sound that has no meaning to the scene where it does not match up on screen. for example happy music when theres chaos. during the clip there is loads of chaos and fighting yet the music track playing is soft a melow.
the mr and mrs smith finall shootout is made more epic due to the confusing soundtrack that has no relevance to whats going on opening up the mind to the choas in contrast to the calm melody.

Analyasis

in this scene the use of sound is what makes half of the scene as the use of contrapuntal sound is used to put into perspective the volume of destruction that is happening. the tune mondo bongo is rather relaxing but the action doesnt allow the viewer to, putting the audience in a unfamiliar mood making the scene an epic rollercoaster.
Sound in mr and mrs smith is used effectivly such as off screen sound. as the sound of gun fire is clear but not where the location is from. this gives us a sense of how they must feel through the sound side of things. this makes the audience feel involved in the scene and makes it all the more enjoyable experience due to emotions the sound evokes such as terror and adrenaline.

Conclusion

in conclusion the use of sound will play a important part in creating my thriller as the dialouge is limited so i would need to make good use on different types of sound other than diegetic.

Research: Lighting (Miss Heath)

lighting

lighting is used in a film to creat the atmospher to set the scene. it can also be used to direct the audience attention to a certain area and or cast shadows to make the scene more intense for example:

Under lighting: Is where the source of light comes from below adding a scary aspect to the charachter this is normally used in horror films

Top lighting: Is used to highlight key features of a charachter creating a glamorous look and brightening up and making a happy scene

Back lighting: When a little amount of light is used and the main
source comes from behind the focus character and creates a
silhouette over the focus character

Low-key: is where very limited amounts of light is used to create
a gloomy atmosphere this is one of the main conventions a thriller
would use

High-key: lighting looks more natural, realistic and
 appealing to our eyes.

Natural lighting: Is when no lighting is used and is what
we would actually see in the location

Analasis

lighting in dark knight is used very well to the extent that it creates the whole scenes
message. low key lighting is used in this particular clip very well as we enter the room to see
the joker sitting at a table in the dark with only 1 source of light from a small lamp. straight
away we know it is some sort of interrogation. this makes the viewer feel drawn into the
scene and intreauges the audience and creates suspension for them

High key lighting is used throughout the scene highlighting important detail needed to capture the action adrenaline and excitement. The lighting used being what the audience would expect to see allows them to follow and understand the narrative clearly without any extra twists to the film. The lighting makes Preston stand out even more as his clothing is white thus making him appear as a beacon of light. The response given to the audience, because of the lighting is that the scene is action packed and the detail should not be missed allowing them to absorb the entire scene and feel immersed in the action. The scene doing this draws out emotions on excitement on nervousness for the protagonists’ safety.

Research: cinematography (miss Begum)

Cinematography

Cinematography is looking the way a frame is shot the angle it is taken in and the movement of the camera. all these element give the audience a variety of representation of the character in the shot. and make the viewer respond in various different ways.
Cinematography is important in the making of a film as varieties of shots make the scene very effective.  the audience need to see a good use of cinematography as this will amplify the response the scene is trying to get out of them.

close up -shows importance and or expressions

medium close up- a view of the character shoulders and above
extreme close up- a focused shot on something in detail
mid shot- above the waist
long shot- the whole character
establishing shot- the setting is shown

 Camera shots

  • An establishing shot shows the whole scene usually sets up the scene and in this clip we see the whole canyon and we get a feel of how high up he is.
  • A long shot will usually show the character from head to toe. allowing us to see the characters full body language.
  • A mid shot is used to capture the action and show detail well. it is usually shows the knees to the head the clip uses this when he is holding onto the cliff and shows the strain on his upper body.
  • A close up is used to show the characters reaction. we see the face and the facial expression we see this in the clip when he focuses on making the twist and climb up the cliff

Analysis of mission impossible opening scene

cinematography is exceptionally well used in mission impossible as the use of a crane shot allowed us multiple angles of the scene. it is used throughout the opening to show the gravity of the danger that Eathen hunt is in yet he remains calm. the audience response to this would be fearful for his safety as the viewer is able to see the whole danger of what he is in thanks to the crane shot.
Cinematography is effectively used in this opening where we are drawn into Eathen when he is dangling of the edge of a cliff. This effect may of been used to show how alone he is on the cliff and his bravery for doing it. The audience are even more interested in the scene as they have been physically drawn into the scene through the effect of zoom. the audience respond to this with excitement to what is to come.

Equilibrium- House Of Mirrors analysis:
Cinematography is used in varieties of ways to represent aspects of the scene. The first significant and effective shot used is a close up shot used just before Preston begins his attack on the enemy troops. The close up is used to capture precise detail on the characters face. The close up shot allows the audience to identify Prestons’ emotions which appear to be focused and stern. This prepares the audience for an exciting action packed battle and the magnitude of his seriousness displays how important it is to complete his mission. Various other shots are used throughout this scene which evokes numerous responses from the viewer. A variety of mid shots and long shots are used simultaneously to generate a thrill, for example when Preston is holding his two pistols in a strong stance ready to take on the next villains to approach him. The mid shot allows the audience to capture Prestons’ body language and infer how powerful his character is leading to a hopeful response from the viewers. Furthermore a long shot is used when Preston is stood in the middle of the final room after defeating the final wave of enemies and is now faced against the lead antagonist. The long shot is used to capture the carnage that has just taken place and display the torment the journey may have caused Preston. This gives meaning to why the audience would be shocked and relieved to what and how Preston has accomplished so far. The use of angles allows the audience to establish hierarchies and strength in character. For example low angle is used when Prestons’ dominance and power overt the villains who continue to come out in large numbers. As the audience and villains look up to him the villains fear his existence whilst the audience can put trust and hope in. once Preston has defeated the villains in the main hall he marches into the big room to confront the main antagonist. As he does this a point of view is used to show Preston scouting the area for his enemies. Putting the audience in his shoes and allowing the audience to feel a part of the scene prepares the audience to relate to his character as they are on his side and want to overcome the antagonist too. The audience here are fully engaged and feel part of the scene therefore allowing them to respond by wanting to defeat the antagonist, now that he is in sight.

camera movements

A panning shot is where the camera moves across showing what’s in view an example of this is showing a high speed car chase and follow the action with one shot.

zoom can be used to intensify a shot in order to draw the audience in or let them feel left out and see the on screen character as alone or weak in this clip we have a zoom in shot to enhance excitement.

A crane shot is used to get a flexible view of the scene which allows us to see different aspects of the scene. In the mission impossible opening we see the cliff from many angles emphasising the danger involved due to the use of a crane.

camera angles

A high angle can be used to represent a character as weak or defenceless this is because it makes the audience appear as if they are looking down on them and have no strength at all
a low angle makes the character appear dominant and is used commonly to show one character overshadow the other asserting power. this is because the audience look up at the character who appears bigger and therefor intimidating.

What is a Thriller (Miss Begum)

according to wikipedia the definition of a thriller is "A thriller provides the sudden rush of emotions, excitement, sense of suspense and exhilaration that drive the narrative, sometimes subtly with peaks and lulls, sometimes at a constant, breakneck pace thrills. In this genre, the objective is to deliver a story with sustained tension, surprise, and a constant sense of impending doom. It keeps the audience cliff-hanging at the "edge of their seats" as the plot builds towards a climax. Thrillers tend to be fast-moving, psychological and threatening, mysterious and at times involve larger-scale villainy such as espionage, terrorism and conspiracy." this is what a thriller boils down to plus the basic conventions a thriller would have. For example twists mystery low key lighting and tension.

What are genres?

There are many genres in the media and film industry such as action, sci-fi, horror, comedy, romance and thriller. It is important to know these genres as it allows us to categorise a film and pick a genre that appeals to our tastes. It is also important to know about genres so a director will know what conventions to use to create a movie that would appeal to their target audience.

The thriller genres

A thriller is a genre that usually creates suspense, tension and excitement as the main elements. A good example of a thriller is silence of the lambs. Other types of genres are action

Thriller films

Examples of popular thriller films like se7en, women in black and silence of the lambs  are all good examples of a thriller film as they all use the key elements to a thriller consisting of tension suspense and excitement. They also all use the typical antagonist setting up obstacles and challenges involving mystery.

Sub genres of thrillers

Common themes in a thriller are: murder, tragedy, suffering, sin and captivity

These themes are commonly used as they create scenes where the audience is made to feel anxiety and terror. The aim of a thriller is to keep the audience alert and deliver a story of sustained tension. When watching a thriller we feel on edge nervous and afraid this arises from an intense build-up of tension. Certain twists in thriller films get us thinking leaving us uncomfortable in our own
